This lecture will explore a theoretical framework through which modern interventions can take old buildings into a new life, with all its different technical and social requirements.

To illustrate this phenomenon, the changing image of Valletta throughout its architectural history will be discussed and used as a backdrop to some recent “acts of modernization”, including the current project for the regeneration of the entrance to the town. As Françoise Choay described them, these are not “about giving a new appearance but about inserting a regenerating implant into the body of old buildings”. These micro-interventions, grafted onto the historic urban fabric, are today contributing to the regeneration of the architectural, cultural and social identity of the town.

AP has also been invited to present on the 13th March at the Archibar part of the Association of Polish Architects SARP at in Katowice, Poland. This event is part of a series of lectures called ‘Masters of Architecture’ aimed at students and architects.
